Acupuncture has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for hundreds of years to treat migraine and other headaches, and to prevent migraines from recurring by addressing imbalances, blockages and deficiencies that lead to them. In spite of this, the large studies proving the “evidence base” for this have lagged behind the clinical success.
A new clinical trial published in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) in April 2017 on the Long Term Effects of Acupuncture Migraine Prophylaxis has shown that a 4 week course of acupuncture can significantly reduce the frequency of migraine headaches for months after treatment has ended. This is important because while a number of medications have been used for migraine prophylaxis, all cause side effects, and none are all that effective.
